March 7, 1965: OTD the first March to Selma began with John Lewis in front along with local activist, Amelia Boynton Robinson, but it was halted by the violence of white police officers on Pettus Bridge—and like Lewis, Amelia was so severely beaten she was hospitalized, but it didn't stop her...
March 9, 1841: OTD the U.S. Supreme Court favorably ruled that the Africans found on the Amistad ship, were illegally enslaved and had a right to fight for their freedom. One of those on the ship was a child, who grew up to be the extraordinary Sarah Margru Kinson.
March 11, 1959: OTD iconic playwright, Lorraine Hansberry, became the first African-American woman to have a play open on Broadway, the classic, "Raisin in the Sun." It was also the first Broadway play directed by an African-American—theater legend, Lloyd Richards.
March 8, 2021: Today is International Women's Day, which was first commemorated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, then eventually spread around the world over the years... This year's theme is #ChooseToChallenge...
March 10, 1913: OTD the great Harriet Tubman passed away in Auburn, NY. She began her role as an extraordinary Underground Railroad conductor in 1850, two years after my great-great-grandparents, William & Ellen Craft escaped from enslavement.
March 12, 1934: Born OTD Virginia Hamilton, one of the most prolific, award-winning writers in youth/children's literature. She wrote captivating fiction & compelling nonfiction books in multiple genres with lead Black/diverse characters, often referred to her work as "Liberation Literature". (Note: her site lists 1934 birth yr. )
March 13, 2020: OTD Breonna Taylor was murdered by undercover police officers, who burst into her apartment without identifying themselves using a no-knock warrant. With respect to those officers still not seeing jail time to date, pease reach out to your U.S. Senator to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
